SIP on Nokia E61 and N80i

My previous post on how to configure a E61 to make VoIP calls has been read by more than 1000 people, underlining how Nokia customers are prone to profit the best from their phones.

To summarize, for those who read about this for the first time, many Nokia phones (E61 and N80i for example) are sold with an embedded SIP client (called Internet Telephone) that users can configure with a SIP account to use VoIP in their phones. The user experience is very good: you just have to select GSM or VoIP, and then if you have WiFi connectivity, a free or cheap VoIP call can be placed. Obviously you can make calls directly from the phone address book.

Some calls (typically IP-IP) are free, others (IP-PSTN for example) are not free, fares and payments vary depending on the service provider, as it happens for Internet connected PCs.

VoIP providers you can refer to configure your phone are Abbeyphone, Gizmo and Truphone.

The procedure to configure the E61 or N80i (here described by Luca) with an Abbeyphone account has two steps:

1) Configure a SIP account
2) Create a profile for the Internet Telephone

As you probably know, Abbeyphone provides alias and password to their users. The alias is in the form 21XXXXXXX: just replace this value with your personal one during the setting.

---
Step 1 of 2: Configure a SIP Account

Menu->Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> SIP settings.
Now add a new SIP profile (Options->Add new): you can call it Abbeyphone, for example.

Profile Name: Abbeyphone
Service Profile: IETF
Default Access point: select the access point that will be used
Public user name: sip:21XXXXXXX@sip.abbeyphone.com
Use Compression: No
Registration: " When needed "
Use Security: No

Proxy Server: sip:sip.abbeyphone.com
Realm: sip.abbeyphone.com
User Name: 21XXXXXXX
Password: insert password for 21XXXXXXX
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060

Registrar Server: sip:sip.abbeyphone.com
Realm: sip.abbeyphone.com
User Name: 21XXXXXXX
Password: the password for 21XXXXXXX
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060

The SIP account is now ready.
--------
Step 2 of 2: Create a profile for the Internet Telephone

Menu->Tools->Settings->Connection->Internet Tel.->Options->New profile.
Suppose the new profile is named "AbbeyphoneTel". Now associate the profile to the previously created SIP account ("Abbeyphone"): Preferred profile: choose Abbeyphone.
---

Now when you want to use VoIP, you have to register to the service:
Menu->Connectivity->Internet Tel->Registration Status->Options->Change. If unseletected, choose Register.

The phone will try to register to the Abbeyphone server. Once the registration is complete, you'll be able to make calls (select Internet call in the Call menu).

truphone has been a real beauty for me on my phones; I run it on Nokia E-60, E-61, N80ie. What I like about truphone is the TruWizard (easy WiFi setup). The truphone integration with WiFi Hotspots, the agressive scanning of hotspots, the automatic sign on at home and the office; I have saved so much on mobile phone calls in recent months using truphone (I believe more than Euro 3000) that I do not want to go back to any other service. --- but what I like the most is the setup service. Easy provisioning by sending an SMS with the word "TRU" to +44 7624 000 000 . Just four clicks and you are up and running on truphone

Hi as,
thank you for your comment.
In my opinion the configuration of such phones with a VoIP account is not easy for all the users, and an automated setup procedure is really welcome. Local numbering is a plus too, giving confidence to the caller.
Anyway someone, such as Mr. Blog, tends to minimize those elements, looking at a future when the phone vendors will provide those features.
I would be interested in the evolution of Truphone: do you plan to provide presence and IM features?

Hi,
Thanks for your technical support for sip setup. My friend has purchased the new E 51 nad wanted to configure it for voip use. I could do it for him with your tips.
But there is still a problem. After it has registered and want to make a call, we select internet call from the number, and then it says 'XXXXXXXX@sip.sipphone.com'
So it is dialing IP. But how to dial a PSTN number via internet call? as it is in fring (one can dial fring / gsm/ sip call).
Need your expert tip on that.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi "newbie to e51",
to dial a PSTN number, say for example an italian (+39) number such as 123456, try these:

sip:+39123456@sip.sipphone.com
sip:0039123456@sip.sipphone.com
tel:+39123456@sip.sipphone.com
tel:0039123456@sip.sipphone.com
sip:+39123456@sip.sipphone.com;user=phone
sip:0039123456@sip.sipphone.com;user=phone

and let me know if it works :)
Cheers
Giacomo
